Killarney is one of those places that instantly sweeps you off your feet: the lakes, the mountains, the charm of the town itself. But while visitors often flock to the big attractions, locals know there’s another side to Killarney. Hidden trails, tucked-away cafés, and those quiet lake moments you only stumble upon when you take a step off the beaten track. If you want to experience Killarney like a local, here are a few secrets worth uncovering.
Start your day with a delicious cup of tea (or coffee) in the very centre of the town. There you’ll find several cute local spots with rich brews, flaky pastries, and friendly faces. Our favourite one is Petit Delice – located on the top of the High Street, this little shop offers a cosy atmosphere, good coffee and a wide selection of homemade pastries.
Knockreer circular walk is where locals go to stretch their legs. This not-so-hidden trail is located just minutes from town, where you can stroll straight from St. Mary’s Cathedral into rolling meadows, woodlands, and sweeping views of the lakes. If you’re lucky, you might even spot wild deer grazing. It’s a peaceful slice of wilderness right at the town’s doorstep.
Catch Your Favourite Match on a Big ScreenIf you’re looking to combine a love of sport with a friendly, local vibe, Scotts Bar is the place to be. Located in a town centre, this family-owned bar comes alive when the big games are on. Whether it’s football, rugby, or something else entirely, with their large screen in the courtyard area, you won’t miss a moment. Pull up a chair, order a perfectly poured pint, and soak up the atmosphere alongside locals.
No visit to Killarney is complete without a stop at Murphy’s Ice Cream. This beloved local spot offers rich, creamy flavours made with fresh local ingredients. Whether you go for a classic like vanilla or something adventurous like sea salt chocolate, a scoop from Murphy’s adds the perfect sweet touch to your Killarney experience.
Ask a local where to catch the most magical sunset, and chances are they’ll point you toward the old Copper Mines trail. It’s a short, scenic walk, and when the evening light hits the lake just right, it feels like the entire landscape glows. Few visitors know about it, but once you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget it.
Stay in the Heart of It AllOf course, experiencing Killarney like a local means staying somewhere that feels part of the town itself. That’s where Scott’s Hotel comes in. Just steps from the buzz of Main Street, Scotts is a modern, welcoming base that blends comfort with convenience.

If you are planning a trip to Killarney, you’re in for a treat! This little town offers a variety of fun things to experience, including local tours that let you soak in its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and unique experiences. A truly unique way to experience the calm beauty of Killarney National Park. You can hop on a traditional jaunting car, take a waterbus boat tour with MV Pride of the Lakes or do a combination of both. These tours last an hour (or two), depending on the option you go for. They are family-friendly, fun for all ages and perfect for a relaxing day out in nature. With various discounted options available for the elderly and families, Killarney Lake Tours offers a perfect activity for everyone visiting the area without taking over the whole day.
Gap of Dunloe ToursIf you want to mix adventure with sightseeing, the Gap of Dunloe Traditional Boat Tours are the way to go. This half-day tour is a great way to experience the gap. It starts with a small boat journey through the lakes, after which you can either take a carriage ride or hike through the narrow valley of the Gap of Dunloe. Surrounded by towering mountains and tranquil lakes, the scenery here is rugged and breathtaking. Taking this tour is a memorable way to explore one of Ireland’s most iconic natural landmarks and is a perfect activity for anyone seeking a fun and adventurous day out.
This is an ideal choice for anyone wanting to explore Killarney at their own pace. The Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus, also known as the Big Red Bus, runs between the town centre and major local attractions. It stops at historic Ross Castle, takes you to the scenic Torc Waterfall, lets you stroll through the gardens of Muckross House, and offers a chance to explore ancient monastic ruins in the Killarney National Park. Tickets are valid for the entire day, allowing passengers to hop on and off at any time between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. If this is your first time visiting the area or if you are short on time, hopping on the Big Red Bus is a perfect way to discover all the main attractions in just one day!
Believe us, there is a tour for everyone here in Killarney. For example, photography enthusiasts can join guided photo walks where professional photographers guide you in capturing the best shots. Fishing fans will find expert-guided tours on the Killarney lakes, targeting trout and salmon. And adventurers can spend a relaxing morning or afternoon exploring the sparkling Lakes of Killarney on a guided kayaking tour.

Scotts Hotel in the heart of Killarney has announced a major upgrade to its in-house connectivity offering, just in time for Kerry’s peak summer holiday season. Delivered by Kerry-based broadband retailer, Ivertec, the milestone installation brings SIRO’s robust fibre-to-the-premise broadband to the hotel ensuring that it has the level of future proofed connectivity essential for the hotel and its guests.
A family-run business known for its warm welcome and central location at the gateway to the Ring of Kerry, Scotts Hotel plays a key role in the local tourism offering. Its new robust fibre broadband service is a major asset to the hotel’s operations and guest experience, supporting everything from High-Definition streaming to virtual conferencing and cloud-based services.
The enhanced connectivity forms part of a wider programme of investment and service upgrades at Scotts Hotel, all focused on elevating the standard of hospitality offered. Scotts Hotel has embarked on a significant €2 million investment program aimed at enhancing its hospitality standards. This comprehensive upgrade includes extensive renovations to 52 of their double rooms, ensuring a blend of modern comfort and traditional Irish charm, alongside the installation of air conditioning throughout the entire hotel for year-round guest comfort, and the addition of solar panels, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
A key part of Scotts Hotel’s upgraded broadband service is its in-built resilience which provides a dual-path fibre system, offering seamless and uninterrupted connectivity. This means that if one fibre route is disrupted, a backup connection automatically activates, ensuring always-on service for hotel guests and staff.
SIRO, Ireland’s leading full-fibre broadband operator, continues to pioneer high-speed connectivity for businesses across the country. SIRO’s network now reaches 143 cities and town across Ireland, powering tens of thousands of homes and businesses in every county in Ireland. In Kerry, SIRO’s network is available in Tralee, Killarney and Castleisland.
Kerry broadband retailer partner Ivertec played a central role in delivering this connection. With a strong reputation built over 25 years, Ivertec is now a leading telecoms provider in the South-West, supporting a wide range of businesses – particularly in the corporate, education, and hospitality sectors.
Maurice O’Donoghue, Managing Director of Scotts Hotel, commented:
“Fast, reliable fibre broadband is not a nice to have, it is now an essential for every business in the hospitality industry. Often, the first question our guests ask when they come through our doors is about the quality of connectivity across the hotel.
“Whether streaming content for devices; catching up on work emails, staying connected with family and friends at home or gaming devices for the kids, our guests expect a high standard of broadband, that’s seamless and hassle-free. Moving to fibre to the premise broadband gives us that certainty of quality of service and our guests a great user experience.
“Of course, as a hospitality business we equally need best in class broadband to undertake daily operations such as digital payments, video conferencing, cloud services and large files transfers, making full fibre broadband vital to working productively and growing our business.”
Gerard O’Sullivan, Ivertec CEO, commented:
“We’re delighted to have been chosen by Scotts Hotel to provide their fibre connectivity solution. Our objective is to support local Kerry businesses to access broadband and connectivity solutions which best meet their unique requirements and commercial priorities.
“With a full fibre broadband connection, Scotts Hotel will have high quality connectivity which can meet current and future data demands of their business and will provide both the hotel and their guests a really positive user experience and high-quality service.”
Aoife O’Reilly, SIRO Head of Enterprise noted:
“Hospitality is a fast changing and challenging sector, which requires businesses to keep innovating and responding to customer requirements and wider trends. Consumers are increasing utilising and engaging with digital technologies, including for leisure, entertainment and travel. Broadband connectivity is the foundation for all digital technologies, making having strong and reliable broadband essential for businesses such as Scotts Hotel.
“Equally, switching off outdated copper broadband, which can’t meet the demands of business today, is now a key priority for Irish businesses. Scott’s Hotel connectivity upgrade ensures that their connectivity allows their business to operate more productively, without disruption or lag, and unlock new digital technologies such as AI, to work better and smarter.”

There are many reasons to come and visit Killarney this summer. The town is booming with tourists, every corner offers delicious food, and the days are long enough to enjoy late afternoon walks in the park. But, if you ask us, hiking the local peaks to experience some of the most amazing views in Kerry should definitely be on the top of your list. Scroll down to find out our staff’s favourite hiking trails around Killarney:

Also known as the highest mountain in Ireland, at 1,038.6 metres high, Carrauntoohil is a challenge well worth taking. But be conscious, this is definitely not a beginner-friendly hike. The clime up takes anywhere from 4.5 to 6 hours. It is widely considered to be a highly challenging climb. One can choose to go for a direct climb over the Devil’s Ladder or the circular route of the Coomloughra Horseshoe. On your way to the very top of Ireland you’ll pass by lakes, hop over streams, follow an exhausting rocky path, and be at the mercy of an ever-changing Irish weather. But in the end, it is all well worth it. The view from the top will leave you speechless.
Mangerton comes in at 839 meters high and is relatively easy to scale for most fitness levels. It is approximately a 3-hour long hike up over broken and uneven ground, with the addition of an occasional steep incline. On the way to the top, you’ll come across the lovely mountain lake known as the Devil’s Punch Bowl – this is the perfect spot for a quick lunch. And while this very point of the hike is absolutely breathtaking, do keep climbing. The panoramic view from the very top is definitely something not to be missed.
Towering over the Gap of Dunloe, Purple Mountain is one of Killarney’s hidden gems. Named after the beautiful purple hue the heather-covered slopes take on, this trail offers both solitude and stunning nature. The hike, while moderately challenging, rewards trekkers with spectacular views. Look over the Upper and Middle Lakes of Killarney, the Black Valley, and even as far as the Dingle Peninsula on a clear day. This route is perfect for those looking for a peaceful yet dramatic escape into nature, away from the busier trails. Allow 4–5 hours to complete the loop, and pack plenty of water, snacks and a camera – you’ll want to remember these views.
Strickeen is the most accessible of all the peaks in the McGillycuddy Reeks mountain range. This makes it ideal for families or those looking for a quick yet rewarding hike. Located right in the Gap of Dunloe, this mountain offers a well-marked path. The full round trip can easily be completed in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Though the elevation gain is modest, the views from the summit are nothing short of incredible. You’ll see the winding path of the Gap, the shimmering lakes below, and the dramatic peaks of the surrounding mountains rising beyond. It’s a great option for sunrise or sunset hikes, and an easy way to feel like you’re on top of the world.

Located only 7 kilometers from Killarney town center, this mountain is probably the most visited one in the area. It offers an easy, hour-and-a-half beginner-friendly climb with a rewarding panoramic view from the top. Most of the climb follows a wooden-board trail, making it an accessible option for families and casual hikers. While you are in the area, we would recommend briefly stopping by the nearby Torc Waterfall on your way back. This beautiful waterfall is very easily accessible and is one of the most well known local attractions. While this waterfall is absolutely breath-taking on any day, it does tend to be especially picturesque after a bit of rain.
Book your stay at Scotts Hotel, located right in the heart of Killarney town. After a long day on the trails, unwind with a hot shower, a hearty meal, and a cosy bed. Our friendly staff are always happy to offer hiking tips and point you towards the best hidden gems. Whether you’re chasing peaks or simply soaking in the views, Scotts Hotel awaits to be your resting spot after a long day.

Unlike some larger clubs, Dooks offers a more intimate and traditionally Irish golfing atmosphere.
Waterville Golf Links is a well known course consistently ranked among the top courses in Ireland. Ballybunion Golf Club is a home to two wonderfully unique and challenging links courses – The Old Course and The Cashen Course. The Old Course offers a pure and challenging golfing experience on Ireland’s west coast. It’s towering dunes, tight fairways, and firm greens demand skill and precision. On the other hand, the newer Cashen Course holds its own with stunning views and a more forgiving layout.
Last but not least, Dingle Golf Link Ceann Sibeal are one of Ireland’s most westerly golf courses. This traditional course is shaped by the unforgiving Atlantic elements and surrounded by pictures countryside. It offers a peaceful and authentic Irish golf experience far away from the crowds. The course features undulating fairways, pot bunkers, and coastal winds to keep golfers on their toes. It’s a hidden gem that captures the soul of Irish golf.

My name is Angelika, and I live in Pleinfeld, a small town near Nuremberg in Germany. During my apprenticeship in Germany, I got the opportunity to participate in a work experience program here in Killarney for two weeks through the Erasmus Program. Since Killarney is the sister town of Pleinfeld, many of our students have the opportunity to take part in work experience placements in Killarney. This time around, a group of 15 students and two teachers are participating in the program. During our stay in Killarney, we are living with host families. I am so happy with my host family, as they have been incredibly kind and welcoming.

From Tuesday to Friday, we gained experience at our work placements. On the first day of my work experience, I received a tour of the Scotts Hotel Killarney to get to know the hotel. On the other days, I gained valuable work experience in several areas, including the marketing department, reception, and housekeeping.
I arrived in Killarney on Saturday, March 29. During the first weekend, we went on an excursion and did the Ring of Kerry by bus. It took almost the whole day. Along the way, we enjoyed breath-taking views of mountains and lakes. We also had the opportunity to visit a golf club called Waterville Golf Links. On Monday, we attended an English class at the Killarney School of English. It was a very interesting and enjoyable cultural experience that gave us the chance to improve our language skills.
After each workday, I went for a walk in Killarney National Park. It is very nice there, and it is a wonderful place to relax. Killarney has a lively town centre, with lots of little pubs and shops at every corner. I went to some of those pubs in the evenings to enjoy Ireland’s favourite drink, Guinness, and to party.
Another item on our list was visiting the Gaelic Roots, a combination of Irish dancing and singing. It was amazing to see it.
The next weekend, we did a hop-on hop-off tour through Killarney. We visited Ross Castle, Muckross House and Gardens, Muckross Abbey, and the Muckross Traditional Farms. All of these are really worth visiting. I liked it very much.

The same weekend, the Wander Wild Festival took place in Killarney. I joined the festival on Sunday, which was our day off. There were lots of activities you could do, such as yoga in the park, kayaking, or taking a healing sound bath. On top of that, different musicians performed live music on the main stage. There were also many activities for children, so there was something for everybody.
Now we have one more week of work before we leave Killarney. I started Monday by helping out in the restaurant. For the next two days, I went on a boat trip with Killarney Lake Tours, starting at Ross Castle, and took some photos to make a leaflet about this area that can be distributed to German tourists. On Thursday, we had a dinner at a Killarney Brewery that we found during our trip on the Ring of Kerry. Our next stop will be Dublin for one night, where we will do some sightseeing. After that, we will return home to Germany on Sunday.
